Janaway Cup Report 2017
Added on September 24, 2017

The last Saturday coaching session of the season is a bit special as we hold the annual Janaway Cup* event on Hill Pond.  Each swim gets a keepnet and 2 hours to catch as many fish as possible with the winner on weight getting the coveted cup.

This year 30 youngsters braved the unseasonably cool winds and bright conditions to try and winkle as many fish as possible out of the pond. Entrants included our regular Saturday morning fishing families and some of the more advanced anglers who have been training on Richardson Lake with Trevor and Paul all season. To even things up we insisted that everyone fished with a 3 metre whip… but bait selection was a little more open!

The match proved tough going for many but it quickly became clear that the development juniors George Evans and Ben Gregoriades were leading the way.  George was on peg 14 and Ben on 15 and both were putting the odd better fish in the net alongside smaller roach and rudd. At the weigh in all the competitors followed the scales round. An early 3lb 8oz took the lead from peg 3 and there followed a tight battle with ounces separating most of the pegs. The Woolgar contingent weighed in another 3lb 8oz weight from peg 10 so first places were tied. However we all knew that George and Ben were sitting on more so when the scales finally got to their pegs excitement was high.

In the end George shaded it with 5lb 12oz over Ben’s 4lb 8oz – two great weights on the day and proof that the more advanced coaching they have been getting has paid off!

With the excitement of the weigh-in over, we all tucked into an excellent barbecue – thanks to Dan, Dawn, Brian, Jo and Eileen for their fine catering! I would like to think all the coaches, helpers, parents and youngsters who have made this year such an enjoyable experience for everyone. Coaching will start up again next year in June so keep your eyes out for dates and see you then!

*The Janaway Cup is fished for every year in memory of Chris Janaway – a former student at Rodborough School and trainee doctor who was tragically killed in 2007 aged only 28 in a motorway accident. Chris loved fishing Godalming waters and was fond of having a packet of jelly beans when fishing. So George not only picked up the handsome cup but two bonus packets of jelly beans to keep him going on the bank!
