Johnsons Lake contains a rare and nationally important head of pure crucian carp for which we are privileged to have stewardship.
Good stewardship brings with it responsibility, and as a result of the tremendous angling pressure to which our valuable crucians were subjected this year, we have determined to protect them during their vulnerable spawning period
A lot of fish were caught this spring, immediately prior to spawning. Unfortunately, a number were subject to the stress of repeat capture, giving rise to concerns about the wellbeing and future composition of our stock. Your General Committee have noted the apparent lack of crucian recruitment at Johnsons over the past few years and the capture of brood fish during the pre-spawning period cannot help.
In consideration of the importance of our stock and the risk to spawning success and recruitment created by pre-spawning capture, we have taken the decision to close Johnsons Lake from April 15th to June 15th inclusive with effect from 2016.
To ensure that our carp anglers always have one other lake in addition to Broadwater open for their fishing, the Busbridge Lake close season will be March 15th to April 14th inclusive with effect from 2016.
