Hope in Hell!

The Environment Agency stocked 100 each of chub, dace, barbel and roach into Hell Ditch in Godalming today.  The top quality fish were delivered directly from the EA’s fish breeding facility at Calverton, Nottinghamshire.

The EA have done sterling work over the last couple of years improving the habitat in Hell Ditch.  They cleared the channel in several sections creating new gravel runs and willow berms to help increase flow rates creating a better environment for insects and fish to thrive.  Today’s stocking celebrates the great work that has been put into habitat improvements along the Ditch

This is part of a long term strategy to create an improved spawning and nursery habitat along Hell Ditch effectively seeding stock fish for the main river in the future.

The Society is very grateful to the agency for this work and would like to pass on our thanks to Ade Bicknell, our fisheries officer, and Dan and the team at Calverton Fish Farm.
